The master is executing a true edge block, easily established by following the line of the sword as well as looking at the positioning of the hands
The master is executing a false edge block, easily established by following the line of the sword as well as looking at the positioning of the hands. The fact that the forefinger on the right hand can be seen, as well as the flat of the back of the right hand can only be accomplished by looking at a false edge movement
The player is executing an angled attack. Please look at his fingers. All four of the right hand completely wrap the handle. The thumb of the right hand is unseen. Also the thumb of the left hand appears at the pommel. This can only be natuarlly accomplished if the attack is angled This attack is a vertical attack. If you look at the hands of the player you see all fingers of the right hand and no thumb on the left hand.
As an aside, please note that in both pictures the pommel of the master occupies the same space between himself and the player, i.e., the pommel is the same distance from him and is the same distance from the ground in both blocks. This is the basic pivot point for blocking with the blade using the true edge or false edge.
